Inspired by the laser harp, I explored the possibilities of making and interpreting sounds through engineered photo-acoustic couplings in this custom instrument, the Magic Ball, fabricated by 3D printing. Laser beams in a convex array point at photodiode detectors such that when the performer blocks one or multiple beams, the musical notes will be played, and the LEDs outside can change colors according to the duration of the notes. The device also works as a jukebox, automatically playing note sequences with accompanying light effects.
